What UM and UIM mean
Uninsured motorist coverage may apply when an at-fault driver has no applicable liability insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage may apply when that driver has insurance but not enough to cover the loss. Exact coverage, exclusions, and requirements depend on the policy and state law.
Find the policy details
Look for the declarations page, coverage limits, endorsements, deductibles, and any notice or consent requirements. Ask the insurer which coverage is being considered and request an explanation in writing if coverage is disputed.
Preserve information about the other driver
Keep the police report number, driver and vehicle information, any known insurance details, witness contacts, and your own policy documents. A hit-and-run claim may have additional reporting or proof requirements.
Document injury and loss
Save treatment records, bills, work records, and insurer correspondence. The availability of payment and the relationship between liability coverage and UM or UIM coverage can be complex. Do not assume that an advertised policy limit is the amount payable.
Ask before a final release
A settlement with one insurer may affect rights under another policy. If you are unsure, seek advice from a qualified local lawyer before signing a release or accepting a final offer.
